Kate (Richardson) has just slept with The General (Robert Duvall) for the first time. Although groomed to be a handmaid,
she wasn't prepared for the emotionally disturbing experience of unwanted copulation. Feeling violated, she
runs back to her room in disgust and looks outside her window. Based on the Margaret Atwood novel, this movie retains
many of the metaphors and symbolisms of the book, evident in this scene where Kate (Richardson) unconsciously seeks
escape by going to the window, her only way of looking out at the world.
